If you pay a visit to Amazon, you’ll be pleased to see that two of the most popular high-end mirrorless cameras on the market are being discounted for a short period of time.
Panasonic Lumix GH3
The first is the wonderful Pansonic Lumix GH3, a high-end MFT model which works well as both a stills and a video camera. Mathieu, who is also a professional videographer, often uses it for his commercial video work. The fact that it has received a noteworthy discount on the body can partially be attributed to the release of the new GX7 and partially to the build up to the holiday season. Some of its most interest specs include: Cinematic Full HD Video 1080/60p, a rugged splash/dust proof body, a built-in EVF, a touch and swivel OLED screen, built-in WiFi and high-speed contrast AF accuracy.
Interestingly, we just read a rumour which suggests that a new high-end Panasonic model is on the brink of being announced, dubbed the Panasonic Lumix 4K. It will not be the successor to the GH3 but it will definitely take its place as the company’s flagship. For this reason, I can only predict more discounts on the GH3 from this point onward so keep your eyes and ears peeled!
Speaking of Panasonic, the 20mm II f/1.7 has just received a price cut as well. You can save on the lens (in silver or black) if you buy it with the GX7 body. This is a limited time offer so if you’ve been toying with the idea of buying the GX7 with this particular lens, this is the time to pick it up!
The second model is the Sony NEX-7, which had until now maintained its original price tag since its release back in August 2011. I suppose it took the announcement of the full-frame A7 and A7r to get Sony to finally shave a significant amount off the price!
The NEX-7 is the camera HDR photographer Trey Ratcliff of Stuck in Customs fame uses for his professional work. It comes with a 24.3 MP APS-C sensor, an OLED EVF, up to 10 fps shooting, Full HD movies at 60p/60i/24p and manual control, a hot shoe for accessories, phase detect AF, and a tiltable 3-inch LCD. Having used it briefly at the Milan PhotoShow last year, we were very impressed with the speed, design and resulting image/video quality produced by this camera.
It should also be mentioned that the discount on Sony NEX lenses is still running. If you buy a qualifying NEX camera such as the NEX-7, you will receive a discount on select lenses. That means a lot in savings if you buy the NEX-7 plus a lens. You can visit the dedicated discount page here!
I think we can all agree that these are very happy days for those into shooting both video and stills with mirrorless cameras!
Which is your favourite between the GH3 and the NEX-7 and why? 🙂
