The Amateur Corner – How does the Olympus Pen E-PL7 handle in a beginner’s hands?

12/09/2014 By Heather

When Mathieu and I write our camera reviews, our experience with the various cameras we’ve used in the past can sometimes skew our perception of the new models we test, especially those that are intended for an amateur audience. This is only natural, as many of the functions, dials, menus and buttons present on the first mirrorless cameras we tested continue to appear on subsequent models as well.

It is for this reason that we handed the new Olympus Pen E-PL7 over my mum, who has only ever used simple $100 point-and-shoot cameras and more recently, her iPad Mini to take photos. Since she had never used a mirrorless camera before, her thoughts and opinions helped us gain fresh insight into the camera from a complete beginner’s point of view. Using Olympus cameras for pet & animal photography – An interview with Lindsay Dobson

09/09/2014 By Heather

Welcome to our series of 100 interviews we will be holding with professional photographers who use mirrorless cameras for work! “Switching to a smaller and lighter system” has become somewhat of a buzz phrase as of late, but many working photographers take this philosophy seriously. From medical reasons such as resolving back and shoulder pain to the simple realisation that bigger does not mean better, photographers are turning to mirrorless systems now more than ever before.

This week’s interview is with Lindsay Dobson, a UK-based environmental portrait photographer who specialises in animals and people. She has won numerous recognised industry medals and accreditations for her animal and nature photography, and gained the title of SWPP and BPPA (The Societies) Photographer Of The Year for Pet Portraiture.

Monthly Flickr Photography Challenge – September 2014 – FRAMES

06/09/2014 By Heather

Have you ever set yourself a specific project or challenge to improve your photography? If not, let me tell you that not only is it an excellent way of developing a specific skill, but it also encourages you to learn about a genre in which you may have had very little interest.

Since we as artists all enjoy exercising our creative abilities and sharing our imagery with a wider audience, Mathieu and I at Mirrorlessons in association with Tyson Robichaud Photography Blog have decided to embark on a monthly Flickr photography challenge, and we invite all of you to join us for the ride!

Check out Inspired Eye: Issue 13 – Developing the eyes, hearts and minds of photographers

03/09/2014 By Heather

Inspired Eye is an online magazine written by photographers for photographers. Unlike most other photography magazines, Don Springer and Olivier Duong’s creation focuses, not on the famous masters of an era long gone, but on working photographers today, the unsung heroes who are shooting, developing, creating, imagining and living out their photographic dreams as we speak. As they state, Inspired Eye is the “photography magazine that [they] wished [they’d] had” back in the day.

The magazine has been designed for photographers of various levels, from beginners looking for inspiration to professional photographers, curious to learn about the techniques of others in their field. Packed with a series of beautiful and very diverse images taken mostly in the street or documentary style, Inspired Eye and the photographers interviewed within its pages will teach you that there is no right way to approach photography. Rather, it shows us that each and every one of us has a unique path to follow in the hunt for personal photographic satisfaction and a distinctive style.
