Panasonic announces the 30mm f/2.8 macro and 42.5mm f/1.7 prime lenses!

23/02/2015 By Mathieu

At the very end of the CP+ show in Japan, Panasonic surprised us all by announcing two new prime lenses: the 30mm f/2.8 Macro and the 42.5mm f/1.7. The first becomes the third native macro lens for the Micro Four Thirds system while the second lens will certainly attract lots of attention because it goes into direct competition with a lens that gives you the best bang for your buck, the M.Zuiko 45mm f/1.8.

Panasonic LX100 vs. Fujifilm X100T – Compact, stylish and great performance: what more could you ask for?

20/02/2015 By Mathieu

Now that smartphones have become popular tools amongst amateurs photographers, the days of entry-level compact cameras seem to be numbered. To keep the segment alive, camera companies have decided to give compacts a new identity through the introduction of high-quality premium compact cameras. No longer are amateur users the target audience. Now, advanced amateurs and even professionals are willing to spend money on small compacts because their capabilities match those of bigger and better systems.

Mirrorless cameras are popular because they are small, but this new wave of compact cameras take this concept even further. They include big sensors (meaning professional image quality) and advanced features while prioritising portability and compactness. Since the beginning, Fujifilm has enchanted the market with its popular X100 series. Panasonic too decided to join this new niche market by introducing the Lumix LX100. While there are many differences between the two, we couldn’t help but think that they represent the best that this new niche market has to offer today.

Sometimes it is interesting to approach a photography project from a unique angle. This is what happened in January when I worked with a collective of three different artists on a common project called “OR”.

The Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II Review, Chapter I: what’s new and what’s great

05/02/2015 By Mathieu

Update: the second part of my review is now online!

The OM-D E-M5 was considered by many to be one of the first serious Micro Four Thirds cameras for advanced amateurs and even professional photographers. It was the camera that took the system to a new level. If you aren’t new to reading my articles on MirrorLessons, you’ll probably remember that the E-M5 was also the camera that convinced me to leave my Nikon DSLR. Then came the E-M1, which set the standard for professional photographers even higher, followed by the E-M10, which despite being officially ranked at the bottom of the OM-D food chain, included many improvements over the original E-M5.

There were a number of aspects that Olympus had the possibility to improve on the successor to the first OM-D camera, and as you’ll see, the company didn’t hesitate to make substantial changes.

A Mirrorless Wedding – Four cameras, three systems, two photographers and one happy couple

23/01/2015 By Mathieu

We hear, read and talk about camera equipment all the time, but doing so inevitably leads us into the perilous trap of arguing too much about which brand/camera/lens is better than the other. The rise of mirrorless cameras over the past two years has probably expanded this war of words even further. “Can a mirrorless camera rival other systems in terms of image quality, speed and performance?” “Can it find a professional application?” “Can a small sensor compete with a larger one?” The question that however is raised less but in my opinion is actually more important is the following:

Up to what point does all this tech talk really matter?
