Living the Life of a London Street Shooter: An Interview with Nicholas Goodden

22/10/2014 By Heather

Welcome to our series of 100 interviews we will be holding with professional photographers who use mirrorless cameras for work! “Switching to a smaller and lighter system” has become somewhat of a buzz phrase as of late, but many working photographers take this philosophy seriously. From medical reasons such as resolving back and shoulder pain to the simple realisation that bigger does not mean better, photographers are turning to mirrorless systems now more than ever before.

This week’s interview is with Nicholas Goodden, a Franco-British award-winning urban and street photographer who resides in the great city of London. His work has been featured in a wide variety of publications including The Huffington Post, Londonist, LondonOnTheInside, Photoshelter and The Phoblographer, and has been included in the global list of the Top 100 Most Socially Influential Photographers.

Wedding Photojournalism with Fujifilm – Guest Post by Paul Richards

20/10/2014 By Heather

The X range of cameras has received a huge amount of critical acclaim and its fair share of criticism too. There are an awful lot of both professional and enthusiast photographers out there making some wonderful images with the Fuji line up, across a wide range of disciplines. One group of photographers for which I think the Fuji line up makes particular sense is documentary wedding photographers.

In the past I’d used Fuji Xs as secondary cameras at weddings and found them to be very useful as an addition to my regular Canon 5D3 setup. Inspired by Kevin Mullins‘ excellent wedding reportage work, I’d used both the Fuji X-Pro and Fuji X100s, with mixed success. To be honest, while I loved using them as a backup and in some of the quieter moments of the day, I didn’t feel that I could completely convert to them from my DSLRs.

That has all changed now… with the Fuji X-T1.

Which Olympus camera should I buy? – Demystifying the OM-D and Pen series

17/10/2014 By Heather

Too much choice–it is a pandemic of the modern age, and is no less prevalent in the digital camera industry than in any other. A little over a generation ago, your analog camera would have lasted five years before being ousted by a newer version. Today a digital camera is lucky to have a shelf life of six months before rumours of something bigger and better begin to whittle away at its value.

When raw becomes redundant – Classic Chrome & the Fujifilm X30

15/10/2014 By Heather

It is pretty hard not to love Fujifilm’s film simulation modes. More than just a fancy name for art filters, these modes actually give your Fujifilm JPGs a distinctive “filmic look” that harks back to the company’s glory days as a film manufacturer.

We have Provia, which is your standard simulation mode with very neutral, true-to-life colours. A little boring to use, yes, but most certainly safe. We have Velvia, which takes Provia’s colours and pumps them with vividness, sometimes too the extreme. If you want to bring your landscapes to life, this is the mode to use. We also have Astia, which sits in between Provia and Velvia and is ideal for portraits. And just to please the portrait photographer even more, there are the PRO Neg. Hi and PRO Neg. Std. modes. In total, there were ten to choose from including some monochrome and sepia modes, and I loved pretty much all of them. As far as I was concerned, Fujifilm’s film simulation line-up was complete.

And then Classic Chrome came along.

Sailor Strap and T&T Garda Strap: Two durable camera straps made from sailing ropes!

14/10/2014 By Heather

If it is true that the prize for the most popular kind of camera strap material goes to leather, then straps made from sailing ropes certainly get the prize for the most unique. So far, Mathieu and I have had the pleasure of trying out handcrafted sailing rope straps from two different makers, Sailor Strap and T&T Garda Strap, both of which left us with a very good impression. Below you can read a brief review of each, and decide whether or not you too want to bring the seas to your strap!
