Working professionally with the Fujifilm X series – Guest Post by Gabriele Lopez

10/10/2014 By Heather

“Are you shooting with a film camera? Is it old? What camera are you using?”

These are amongst the classic questions I am asked while working professionally as a photographer.

But first, let me introduce myself …

My name is Gabriele Lopez. I’ve lived and worked in Milan (Italy) as a professional photographer since 2004.

My jobs include: commercial photography which ranges from corporate to events, portraits mainly for local actors and books, weddings taken in a photojournalistic manner and personal projects that I do for myself and that the Millenium Images agency in London distributes. I constantly realize personal and collective projects in the form of self-printed books and fanzines.

First impressions of the Sony RX100 III: Is it worth upgrading from the RX100 II?

08/10/2014 By Heather

If you’ve been following MirrorLessons from the beginning, you might remember that we purchased a Sony RX100 II for our holiday in Wales last year. Even back then, we were highly impressed by the way Sony managed to merge high-end technology and compactness into one body. It was the first mirrorless camera that truly lived up to the definition of “pocketable” while producing images of such quality that one would feel comfortable submitting them to a client.

Monthly Flickr Photography Challenge – October 2014 – STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

07/10/2014 By Heather

Have you ever set yourself a specific project or challenge to improve your photography? If not, let me tell you that not only is it an excellent way of developing a specific skill, but it also encourages you to learn about a genre in which you may have had very little interest.

Since we as artists all enjoy exercising our creative abilities and sharing our imagery with a wider audience, Mathieu and I at Mirrorlessons in association with Tyson Robichaud Photography Blog have decided to embark on a monthly Flickr photography challenge, and we invite all of you to join us for the ride!

Flickr Photography Challenge: FRAMES – It’s time to vote!

01/10/2014 By Heather

Yup, it’s that time of the month again; time to vote for your favourite image submitted for the Monthly Flickr Photography Challenge held in association with Tyson Robichaud! (Time really does fly!) The theme for the month of September was FRAMES, as chosen by last month’s winner BillyBurg, who was also the winner of our recent 6-Month Mark Giveaway!

Admittedly, this theme was a little more challenging than most as it was based around a composition rather than a subject, but we were really impressed with many of the submissions. While frames generated by buildings are a given, I came to realise just how many frames naturally exist in nature as well thanks to your images.  [Read more…] about Flickr Photography Challenge: FRAMES – It’s time to vote!

Which are the smallest mirrorless cameras in the world today?

30/09/2014 By Heather

The other day, I was sitting in the living room with my mum over the usual cup of tea. The conversation had jumped from my life in Italy to gardening to travel, when it finally took a turn towards the inevitable, photography. For years she has used my old Olympus waterproof compact for everything from landscape to plant and wildlife photography, and though it takes reasonable pictures in daylight, it suffers in more challenging conditions. Knowing that she wanted to take better pictures, I recently gave her my Nikon D3000 (an old camera by digital standards but still miles better than her low-end compact) but she’s only ever taken it out once.

At first I couldn’t understand why–after all the D3000 is hardly a large camera as DSLRs go–but compared to the tiny Olympus, I realise now that it must have felt like a literal millstone around her neck.
