Review of the The Complete Guide to Sony’s Alpha 7 & 7r by Gary Friedman

08/08/2014 By Heather

When I sit down to read a camera manual, my expectations usually aren’t very high. In the best case scenario, it is simply a tedious read. In the worst, the sections are unorganised, critical information is often missing, and the technical language is too complex for the average amateur.

Fortuitously, this is not the case with The Complete Guide to Sony’s Alpha 7 and 7r by Gary Friedman. In 612 image and information-rich pages, Gary covers every aspect of Sony’s first full-frame interchangeable lens cameras, from the basic functions to less-obvious tips, tricks and shortcuts that even the Sony manual doesn’t touch upon.

Monthly Flickr Photography Challenge – August 2014 – ANIMALS

06/08/2014 By Heather

Have you ever set yourself a specific project or challenge to improve your photography? If not, let me tell you that not only is it an excellent way of developing a specific skill, but it also encourages you to learn about a genre in which you may have had very little interest.

Since we as artists all enjoy exercising our creative abilities and sharing our imagery with a wider audience, Mathieu and I at Mirrorlessons in association with Tyson Robichaud Photography Blog have decided to embark on a monthly Flickr photography challenge, and we invite all of you to join us for the ride!

Flickr Photography Challenge: LONG EXPOSURES – It’s time to vote!

01/08/2014 By Heather

Yup, it’s that time of the month again; time to vote for your favourite image submitted for the Monthly Flickr Photography Challenge held in association with Tyson Robichaud! (Time really does fly!) The theme for the month of July was LONG EXPOSURES, as chosen by last month’s winner Giovanni Tabbò (Flickr), whose black and white example image can be seen above. We really loved all your submissions, and were happy to see a variety of subjects and landscapes represented in the photographs. Good job, everyone! 🙂  [Read more…] about Flickr Photography Challenge: LONG EXPOSURES – It’s time to vote!

Check out Inspired Eye: Issue 12 – Developing the eyes, hearts and minds of photographers

30/07/2014 By Heather

Inspired Eye is an online magazine written by photographers for photographers. Unlike most other photography magazines, Don Springer and Olivier Duong’s creation focuses, not on the famous masters of an era long gone, but on working photographers today, the unsung heroes who are shooting, developing, creating, imagining and living out their photographic dreams as we speak. As they state, Inspired Eye is the “photography magazine that [they] wished [they’d] had” back in the day.

The magazine has been designed for photographers of various levels, from beginners looking for inspiration to professional photographers, curious to learn about the techniques of others in their field. Packed with a series of beautiful and very diverse images taken mostly in the street or documentary style, Inspired Eye and the photographers interviewed within its pages will teach you that there is no right way to approach photography. Rather, it shows us that each and every one of us has a unique path to follow in the hunt for personal photographic satisfaction and a distinctive style.

The Pet Shop Boys ‘Electric’ Tour – Using the Olympus OM-D E-M1 for concert photography

29/07/2014 By Heather

I’m not really what you would call an avid concert goer, but as soon as I heard that one of my favourite groups, the Pet Shop Boys, would be holding a free concert in Turin’s enormous Piazza San Carlo during the Traffic Festival, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. I had seen them in concert over ten years ago with my mum in downtown Toronto, and while the experience was unforgettable, from where we were sitting, Neil and Chris appeared to be no more than two tiny moving specks off in the distance.
