Monthly Flickr Photography Challenge – July 2014 – LONG EXPOSURES

06/07/2014 By Heather

Have you ever set yourself a specific project or challenge to improve your photography? If not, let me tell you that not only is it an excellent way of developing a specific skill, but it also encourages you to learn about a genre in which you may have had very little interest.

Since we as artists all enjoy exercising our creative abilities and sharing our imagery with a wider audience, Mathieu and I at Mirrorlessons in association with Tyson Robichaud Photography Blog have decided to embark on a monthly Flickr photography challenge, and we invite all of you to join us for the ride!

Change your focal length, renew your vision: Using the XF 10-24mm f/4 in Turin

03/07/2014 By Heather

Too often I’ve wandered aimlessly around Turin with a standard 35mm or 50mm equivalent attached to my camera, hoping in vain that the buildings, monuments, streets and people will somehow reveal an unknown facet of themselves to me to cure the monotony of the daily shoot. Don’t get me wrong: I love being out on the streets of this vibrant city with a camera in my hand but sometimes, everything around me, regardless of how beautiful, tends to lose its significance. I believe this is a common ailment called photographer’s block.

Fujifilm X-T1 Review: A Canon User’s Perspective – Guest Post by Duncan Fawkes

02/07/2014 By Heather

duncan fawkes bio picThe following is a guest post by the extremely talented outdoor photographer Duncan Fawkes. We discovered him on Twitter after seeing a selection of his powerful images from Scotland, the Peak District, the Lake District and Wales – four places for which we both have a deep affinity. A quick interaction between us soon led to this guest post, a review of the Fujifilm X-T1 interspersed with a handful of Duncan’s best images. We are certain you will enjoy reading his thoughts. Please remember to pay a visit to his website once you’ve finished reading to see more of his amazing work!

I’ve been a Canon user since I started photographing seriously in 2007. For the last 6 years I’ve been using the Canon 5D Mark 2/3.

Overall I’ve been very happy with the 5D. The image quality is terrific, and the controls are very well laid out and intuitive. It’s a very usable camera and a great performer.

However I was finding that its size and weight meant that I would often leave it at home. For dedicated landscape photography trips I’d take the big bag with me, but for everything else – family days, day trips, commuting, a leisurely stroll – the only camera I had with me was my iPhone.

Check out Inspired Eye: Issue 11 – Developing the eyes, hearts and minds of photographers

01/07/2014 By Heather

Inspired Eye is an online magazine written by photographers for photographers. Unlike most other photography magazines, Don Springer and Olivier Duong’s creation focuses, not on the famous masters of an era long gone, but on working photographers today, the unsung heroes who are shooting, developing, creating, imagining and living out their photographic dreams as we speak. As they state, Inspired Eye is the “photography magazine that [they] wished [they’d] had” back in the day.

The magazine has been designed for photographers of various levels, from beginners looking for inspiration to professional photographers, curious to learn about the techniques of others in their field. Packed with a series of beautiful and very diverse images taken mostly in the street or documentary style, Inspired Eye and the photographers interviewed within its pages will teach you that there is no right way to approach photography. Rather, it shows us that each and every one of us has a unique path to follow in the hunt for personal photographic satisfaction and a distinctive style.

Flickr Photography Challenge: NATURE – It’s time to vote!

01/07/2014 By Heather

Yup, it’s that time of the month again; time to vote for your favourite image submitted for the Monthly Flickr Photography Challenge held in association with Tyson Robichaud! (Time really does fly!) The theme for the month of June was NATURE, as chosen by last month’s winner Nuno Quina (Twitter/Flickr), and we received some excellent submissions. I was surprised and pleased to see that most of the photographers who participated managed to avoid the common cliches of nature photography and come up with some very unique compositions.
