Looking Lovely in Leather: Review of the Figosa neck and wrist straps

19/06/2014 By Heather

It is hard not to feel a certain degree of affection for a company that has its origins in a city only a few dozen kilometres from your doorstep.

Meet Figosa, an Italian camera strap manufacturer from Genova. It was founded by Andrea and Laura who handcraft every one of their straps from genuine high-quality leather. They chose the name Figosa because in Italian, it means ‘something cool’, and indeed, the simple addition of one of their straps can transform your mirrorless camera into something of a fashion accessory that you’ll always be proud to wear out on the streets.

For the Love of Landscapes and the OM-D: An Interview with Steve Gosling

17/06/2014 By Heather

Welcome to our series of 100 interviews we will be holding with professional photographers who use mirrorless cameras for work! “Switching to a smaller and lighter system” has become somewhat of a buzz phrase as of late, but many working photographers take this philosophy seriously. From medical reasons such as resolving back and shoulder pain to the simple realisation that bigger does not mean better, photographers are turning to mirrorless systems now more than ever before.

This week’s interview is with Steve Gosling, a UK-based professional photographer who specialises in producing creative & contemporary landscape images. His stunning images have appeared in advertisements, books, magazines, newspapers & calendars, have been exhibited in venues throughout the UK and have also won awards in both national and international competitions.

Behind the Photograph – Blues on the Beach with the Olympus Pen E-P5

12/06/2014 By Heather

As many of you already know, one of my favourite subjects to photograph is the butterfly. Cliché as my preference may be, I find a certain kind of quietude I simply cannot find elsewhere when it is just me, my camera and the “flying flowers” that colour my photographs. My passion first took form a few years ago thanks to my dear dad (you can see his Flickr collection of butterfly photos here) who is an avid amateur lepidopterist, and has expanded beyond the simple photography of these gorgeous insects to the careful documentation of their names and the various locations where they were seen. One photograph in particular that left an impression on me is the one you see below of a Common Blue feeding off of a holly plant on the coast of mid-Wales.

The 6 Best Mirrorless Cameras for Experienced Amateurs (2015)

11/06/2014 By Heather

Having already written a guide to the best mirrorless cameras for beginners and professionals, we felt that the next logical step was to write an article aimed at the experienced amateur who knows his or her way around the technical aspects of cameras and has mastered the art of taking great photographs but has never made an living off of it. We’re talking about the enthusiast who is willing to invest more than your average person in quality gear but does not require all the advanced functions found on a high-end professional camera. Does this sound like you? Then you’ve come to the right place.

Check out Inspired Eye: Issue 10 – Developing the eyes, hearts and minds of photographers

09/06/2014 By Heather

Inspired Eye is an online magazine written by photographers for photographers. Unlike most other photography magazines, Don Springer and Olivier Duong’s creation focuses, not on the famous masters of an era long gone, but on working photographers today, the unsung heroes who are shooting, developing, creating, imagining and living out their photographic dreams as we speak. As they state, Inspired Eye is the “photography magazine that [they] wished [they’d] had” back in the day.

The magazine has been designed for photographers of various levels, from beginners looking for inspiration to professional photographers, curious to learn about the techniques of others in their field. Packed with a series of beautiful and very diverse images taken mostly in the street or documentary style, Inspired Eye and the photographers interviewed within its pages will teach you that there is no right way to approach photography. Rather, it shows us that each and every one of us has a unique path to follow in the hunt for personal photographic satisfaction and a distinctive style.
