Monthly Flickr Photography Challenge: Music

06/04/2014 By Heather

Have you ever set yourself a specific project or challenge to improve your photography? If not, let me tell you that not only is it an excellent way of developing a specific skill, but it also encourages you to learn about a genre in which you may have had very little interest.

Since we as artists all enjoy exercising our creative abilities and sharing our imagery with a wider audience, Mathieu and I at Mirrorlessons in association with Tyson Robichaud Photography Blog have decided to embark on a monthly Flickr photography challenge, and we invite all of you to join us for the ride!

Flickr Photography Challenge: Working with one light source – It’s time to vote!

01/04/2014 By Heather

First and foremost, we’d like to thank everyone who participated in our first Monthly Flickr Challenge held in association with Tyson Robichaud. We had lots of great submissions, and it seems like everyone had fun experimenting with the theme!

As you can imagine, it was a real challenge to narrow our choices down to just three. In the end, we went for the three images which we felt best exemplified the purpose of the challenge – to use one light source in a creative manner.

LEE Little Stopper, HandlePod and Olympus Pen E-P5: Light gear for long exposures

24/03/2014 By Heather

Though I’ve always had a fondness for long exposure photography, my interest in seriously experimenting with it myself first emerged when I came across FlixelPix’s excellent article about using the LEE Seven5 System with the Fujifilm X100s. In his article, he speaks about his initial outings with the Big Stopper, a 10-stop ND filter for daytime long exposures, and shares what he calls “test shots,” though I’m sure you’ll agree they are deserving of a better title than that! 🙂

Up until recently, the Big Stopper had been the only long exposure option from LEE for compact system cameras. However, complaints that 10-stops was too much for sunrises and sunsets led the company to produce a second filter, the 6-stop LEE Little Stopper, which is the filter I spontaneously ended up ordering at the UK Photography Show a couple of weeks ago.

The Samsung NX Mini: They just keep getting smaller and smaller…

20/03/2014 By Heather

It seems like just yesterday that we met the Panasonic Lumix GM1, the smallest interchangeable lens camera on the market. Then, on Wednesday this week, Samsung announced the super thin NX Mini. Not only is it the ultimate selfie machine thanks to its 3-inch rotating flip-touch screen, but at just 0.8 inches in thickness and a weight of 158 grams, it is also officially the thinnest interchangeable lens compact system camera (CSC) on the market. The GM1, on the other hand, retains its title as the smallest as far as length and width are concerned.
