The Barmouth Motocross Weekend 2015 – Nikon 1 J5 and Nikkor 70-300mmm sample image gallery

20/10/2015 By Mathieu

Update: you can also check out our Nikon J5 full review!

Since its announcement in March 2014, I’ve been very curious to try the 1 Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 with a Nikon 1 camera. The 1 system has always had one of the fastest autofocus systems among mirrorless cameras and with that lens mounted, you get a 189-810mm (full-frame equivalent) in a very small and lightweight package (less than 800g).

Sony A7r II: compressed vs. uncompressed Raw and a firmware wish list

19/10/2015 By Mathieu

Today Sony released firmware update 2.0 for the Sony A7r mark II. It allows users to select the uncompressed Raw format, an option already available on the A7s II and RX1r II. The update (hopefully) brings to an end the long debate about the Sony A7 series having only a lossy compressed Raw file. There have been reports and discussions about artefacts you can get with these files but I have been testing A7 cameras since they were first released in late 2013 and in the real-world I have never found this to be a real issue. However I will always support a solution that gives more choice to the customer and satisfies the most demanding of users.

The best mirrorless cameras under $500 – 2015 edition

16/10/2015 By Mathieu

When beginners or amateurs are faced with buying their first mirrorless camera, the most they are willing to spend is usually around $500 (US). Although we’d written a list back in 2013 detailing the best mirrorless cameras under $500, we felt it was high time to update it with both the latest models and cameras that have come down in price since their release.

They just keep on coming! – The new Sony RX1r II is announced

14/10/2015 By Mathieu

If you were thinking that the announcements for this year were over, the last few days have proven quite the contrary. Today Sony surprised everyone by announcing the successor to the original RX1/RX1r cameras released 3 years ago. The RX1 was the first compact camera with a full-frame sensor and a prelude to more full-frame products that Sony would release later on in the form of the A7 system. This new mark II version keeps the same stunning 35mm f/2 Zeiss Sonnar lens and couples it with the 42MP A7r mark II sensor. But that’s not all!
