Sony announces four long-awaited full-frame E-Mount lenses

04/03/2015 By Mathieu

Today Sony officially announced four lenses that have already been showcased at various photo shows since last year including Photokina and CP+. They have been designed for its mirrorless full-frame system but will also work on the mirrorless APS-C system because the mount (E-mount) is the same. The FE system now has 12 lenses including the two Zeiss Loxia primes. Let’s have a closer look at their characteristics.

The Samsung NX1 Full Review – Potentially the best mirrorless camera on the market

28/02/2015 By Mathieu

We often read and hear the sentence “we live in very interesting times when it comes to photography equipment”. And it is nothing short of true. With the rise of mirrorless systems in the last two years, the number of quality cameras and brands on the market has multiplied. Four years ago I would never have imagined that I would be placing Samsung among them. Their line of cameras wasn’t bad but I was more troubled by the philosophy (or lack thereof) behind them.  The many “Buy a camera and get a tablet free” deals were evidence that the Korean brand placed cameras on the same level as the many other electronic devices they design.

Mirrorless cameras and HDR: the good, the bad and the ugly

25/02/2015 By Mathieu

If there is one digital photography technique that is very popular among photographers, it is HDR. It is simple to perform and can deliver results that are extremely visually appealing. However the fact that it is among the most popular techniques also means that it is one of the most abused (if you allow me to use the term), especially now that the internet and social media platforms are part of our daily workflow.

My goal here isn’t to write yet another tutorial about how to create HDR images. There are so many articles out there that there isn’t the need to add to the list. Instead I would like to share my personal opinion about HDR photography, list my favourite mirrorless camera for performing HDR, and explain why it can sometimes be unnecessary.

Introducing the Konost FF, the first “true” digital rangefinder camera

24/02/2015 By Mathieu

Fujifilm may have been the first to put an electronic rangefinder on the market in the form of the Fujifilm X100T, but there seems to be a new kid on the block that claims to have the first “real” digital rangefinder camera on the way.

Yesterday a new website surfaced followed by a series of news about an up-and-coming company based in California called Konost and their Konost FF, a very simple rangefinder camera with a full frame CMOS sensor and Leica M mount. It has been designed by young and innovative engineers with a great passion for photography. With the simplest design and the most essential commands, they aim to give users a “pure photography” experience.
