Happy Birthday MirrorLessons || The Launch of Our Flickr Pool

04/01/2014 By Mathieu

This time last year, in the midst of hurried Christmas and New Years preparations, Heather and I were frantically adding the final touches to what would become a project that would change our lives as we knew them. It was a project that would give a new definition to the word ‘photography’ as we had experienced it up to that point. It was a project that would open doors to new people, places and possibilities.

That project was Mirrorlessons, which is celebrating its first birthday today! And by pure coincidence, it’s Heather’s birthday as well. Happy 29th!

2014 is at the door: It’s been a great year, folks!

31/12/2013 By Mathieu

With the end of 2013 drawing near, the time has come for us to sum up the year and what it meant for the mirrorless world.

I don’t like to create rankings of the best and worst cameras of the year because camera preference is mostly a personal matter and what is good for me could be bad for you. What I can say, however, is that it has certainly been a very interesting year for mirrorless cameras. And from the news and rumours we’ve read so far, 2014 could be an even better year than 2013.

Christmas in Lyon: A Sony A7 Gallery (with Leica Summilux M lenses)

28/12/2013 By Mathieu

Since the release of the new Sony A7 and A7r, there has been a lot of talk about the cameras and their use with third party lenses. Of course Leica M lenses have been the hottest topic. The idea of using the world’s best lenses on an affordable full frame body has intrigued many photographers and enthusiasts. I don’t own any Leica lenses and would certainly not start a collection now just because I bought the A7. As wonderful as they are, I wouldn’t use them enough to justify the expense.

The Quest for Full Frame – Part 2: Hands-On with the Sony A7 & A7r

18/12/2013 By Mathieu

We finally made it! Last Saturday (and a little bit of Sunday) we managed to put our hands on the new hot topic in the mirrorless world, the Sony A7 & A7r. It goes without saying that the A7 & A7r are the announcement of the year. Sony was the first brand to have the guts to put a full frame sensor into a mirrorless interchangeable-lens system and at a very competitive price! And yes, the price is probably the most important aspect of those new cameras.

I usually don’t waste too many words on the price of a camera unless it is too high, but here we have a pleasant surprise. Let’s be clear, they aren’t cheap and as a system they will require a big investment but if I think about the price of the RX1, the first compact full frame camera, when it was first released, the least I can say is that Sony has become very competitive now. The brand desperately wants these products to succeed, probably more than other products that they have released before.

Are the A7 & A7r the cameras many photographers and mirrorless enthusiasts have been waiting for?

The Quest for Full Frame: Is it worth it? – Part I

14/12/2013 By Mathieu

Full Frame: these two words put together make lots of photographers happy. Immediately we think of gorgeous image quality, beautiful shallow depth of field, exceptional dynamic range and great low-light performance. But technical specifications aside, what are the real benefits of using a Full Frame camera and what are the reasons to choose one?
