A New Nikon 1 Portrait Lens: the 32mm f/1.2

14/05/2013 By Heather

The fastest autofocus lens out of all digital mirrorless system lenses has just been announced by Nikon. It is a fixed focal length 32mm f/1.2 (or 86mm in 35mm format) designed for the Nikon 1 system. With an aperture of f/1.2, it is every Nikon 1 owner’s dream portrait lens.

The 32mm is the very first lens in the Nikon 1 system to employ Nikon’s trademark Nano Crystal Coat for reduction of ghost and flare. It comes with a Silent Wave Motor that utilizes the close-range correction system for focus drive to produce high-resolution and realistic textures, while reducing aberration.

Nikon presents the new Nikkor 32mm f/1.2 lens for the Nikon 1 series

13/03/2013 By Heather

Do you own a mirrorless camera in the Nikon 1 series? Then you’ll be over the moon to hear that Nikon is prepared to released a new lens for the system … and it’s a goodie.

It will be a 32mm f/1.2 portrait lens, which is the equivalent of an 86.4mm focal length on a full-frame camera. Both large and fast, it will make a great addition to any Nikon enthusiast’s collection. Not to mention it looks quite fine paired with the V2.

Nikon Coolpix A: The new point-and-shoot with a large sensor

05/03/2013 By Heather

With the photography world’s attention fixated upon the long-awaited release of the Fujifilm x100s and x20, Nikon has been laying low, seemingly uninterested (or unprepared) to challenge its competitors with a new high-end point-and-shoot of its own.

What a surprise, then, when today, Nikon announced the pending release of the new Nikon Coolpix A, a compact point-and-shoot camera with a fixed 18.5mm lens with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 and a large 16-megapixel DX sensor. Interestingly, the DX sensor, used in entry-level and semi-professional Nikon DSLRs, is much bigger than the CX sensor found in the Nikon 1 mirrorless series. This begs the question: will we one day see a mirrorless DX camera from Nikon?

CES 2013: thoughts about the new Nikon 1 cameras

08/01/2013 By Mathieu

Despite its highly-criticized small sensor, the Nikon 1 camera series has proved itself a worthy contender in the mirrorless camera market. The success of the J version further reinforces that Nikon made a wise choice in choosing a small sensor, even though they managed to attract fewer professionals than other brands.

As I see it, Nikon has tried to differentiate itself from the competition by introducing a system based more on functionality than on overall quality image or professional appearance. Nikon 1s are fun to use, and that’s probably what matters the most.
