Nikon Z6 and Z7 Review – First Impressions

The wait is finally over. Nikon has unveiled its new mirrorless system, the first with a 35mm format sensor. It arrives seven years after the not-so-successful Nikon 1 series which has now been discontinued.

We had the chance to see a pre-production version of the two cameras at the UK press event and these are our early findings. You can watch the video or read the written version below.

The Nikon 1 system is often underrated because of its small 1-inch CX sensor but it offers both stunning autofocus performance and continuous shooting speeds. The problem is that the series didn’t get off on the right foot. The first models were too expensive and I’ve always felt that there was a large discrepancy between the amazing performance and the target user. Expert photographers generally don’t consider the system because of the small sensor, while shooting at 30 or 60fps is probably too much for an amateur’s needs.

Today Mathieu and I had some exclusive one-on-one time with the brand new Nikon 1 V3, the only sample available in Italy at the moment. Since it was a pre-production model, we weren’t permitted to take any of the images or videos home but they had no problem with us taking some product shots of the camera and the 1 Nikkor VR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 PD-zoom. With any luck, we should be able to test a finalised version come April.

The Nikon 1 system was officially announced back in September 2011, and I have always found it intriguing. The Japanese firm created something different from any other mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera (or Compact System Camera as the firm prefers to call it) on the market by concentrating all its efforts on speed and performance. However, despite the initial popularity of the system, two years down the road Nikon is rumoured to be re-thinking the entire line because of its poor sales (especially in Europe and America). For such a new system, it almost sounds like a defeat. But is the Nikon 1 system really that bad? I finally got the chance this past weekend to try out the V2 and get a sense of the pros and the cons of the system.

Photoshow 2013 – Hands-on with the new Nikon Coolpix A

Nikon announced the Coolpix A at the beginning of March 2013. It is the first Coolpix to incorporate a large sensor, the DX sensor that is used in Nikon entry and medium level DSLRs. In fact, it seems to share the exact same 16 megapixel sensor as the Nikon D7000. The Coolpix A features a 200-6400 ISO sensitivity range, and doesn’t have a low pass filter, which should increase the sharpness of the pictures. It has fixed 18.5mm lens (28mm equivalent), and is the smallest compact camera with a large sensor, according to Nikon.
