Enjoy the light, love the dark – The Sony A7s Full Review

10/09/2014 By Mathieu

The announcement of the Sony A7s back in April was a surprise for everyone, even the various rumour sites, which are always on top of the most recent leaks. For me, it was the camera I had been hoping to see from Sony, a camera that would concentrate less on megapixels and more on other features. But to desire a camera with specific specs is one thing, to try it and see what it can do in real conditions is another.

It is also important to understand if these new features, however amazing they be, can really make a difference to the photographer. This is why I’ll cut to the chase right now and say that this camera produces outstanding low-light results and that 102400 ISO is usable. You probably knew that already anyway, so I won’t repeat it further.

Speed in a small and simple package: Review of the Sony a6000

02/09/2014 By Heather

We’ve been very keen on testing the Sony a6000 since its announcement back in February 2014, but with so many other interesting cameras emerging around the same time, it sadly fell by the wayside. Mathieu did spend a day with the camera during the Turin Colour Run courtesy of Sony Italia, but it wasn’t enough to write up a substantial review. Thankfully, we recently came across a wonderful service here in the UK called Hireacamera.com, whereby you hire cameras and lenses at a reasonable price for any given length of time. As soon as I saw they had the a6000 in stock, I contacted them and went about preparing for our very first hire!

Let’s take selfies! First impressions of the new Olympus Pen E-PL7

28/08/2014 By Mathieu

The word “selfie” has definitely entered our daily vocabulary thanks to the “smartphotography” trend, and recently many camera brands have added new functionalities to their entry level cameras so that their users can take better ones. Olympus has upped the ante with the new Olympus E-PL7, a camera that focuses on “superior selfies”. But the question that naturally arises is: do selfies have a place on proper cameras in today’s smartphone-dominated world?

Exploring the city of Edinburgh: Thoughts about the Fujifilm X-E2

18/08/2014 By Heather

As followers of this blog may know, Mathieu and I spend every summer in Wales where my parents live. Whereas most years we travel straight from Turin to their house, the first stop on our journey back to our “home away from home” this time around was the vibrant city of Edinburgh. Waiting for us there were not only my parents but also two family friends from Canada who I’ve known ever since I was born. To my surprise, one of them had bought a Fujifilm X-E2 especially for the trip after discovering mirrorless cameras through this blog. Since I’d only ever tried the X-E2 once at Fujifilm Touch and Try session in Italy, we decided that it would be fun to switch cameras for the day: he would use our X-T1 and we would take his X-E2 out for a spin.

The Complete Panasonic GH4 Review – Chapter One: Still Photography

13/08/2014 By Mathieu

The Micro Four Thirds system has certainly reached its maturity in the last two years. The new Panasonic Lumix GH4 is the latest example of how advanced the system has become. I feel that this camera in particular is more important than any other MFT camera because it represents a great step not only in terms of stills but also video recording.
