Portrait Perfection – The Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 review

21/07/2015 By Mathieu

Update: the Batis 2/25mm review is now online!

Zeiss caused quite a stir when it announced its second family of lenses designed exclusively for the Sony E-mount system. Unlike the Loxia lenses (see our review here) that are manual focus, the Zeiss Batis 85mm offers everything you would expect from a modern lens: autofocus, optical stabilisation and the world’s first digital OLED screen that replaces the classic distance scale marked on the lens.

Portraits with Sony E-mount primes: Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 vs. 90mm macro vs. 55mm f/1.8

13/07/2015 By Mathieu

What happens when you have three interesting portrait lenses all at the same time? You do a comparison shootout of course!

At the end of last week, we received both the new Zeiss Batis 85mm and Sony 90mm macro lenses for testing. The Sony FE system is rapidly expanding, so much that we certainly can’t complain about the lack of lenses anymore. Among the focal lengths that many people were waiting for, there was a good portrait lens. Zeiss designed the 85mm (along with the 25mm f/2) to inaugurate its second family of lenses made specifically for the Sony full frame mirrorless cameras called Batis.

Comparing Panasonic and Sony’s premium compacts – Lumix LX100 vs. RX100 III & IV

09/07/2015 By Mathieu

Update: this article now includes my complete findings for both the RX100 mark III and mark IV.

When we published our comparison between the LX100 and the Fujifilm X100T, many of you asked us to do the same for the Lumix camera and the Sony RX100 series. The two cameras belong to the same “premium compact” category and are both very appealing options, so the question was a logical one. I first wrote this article comparing the Lumix camera with the RX100 mark III. Now that our RX100M4 review is online, I went on to update the article with my findings about the latest premium compact camera from Sony. Now you might ask yourself why we’ve chosen to do a three-way camera comparison instead of just the two most recent models from each brand…

The Olympus OM-D E-M5 mark II review, Chapter II – The traveller’s ideal companion

06/07/2015 By Mathieu

Five months have passed since my first review of the OM-D E-M5 mark II. I had the chance to test it before its official announcement and as such, I decided to concentrate on the many new features that camera has to offer. Being among the first to review a new product has its obvious advantages, but it is nice to come back to it a second time to check other aspects I didn’t have time to test in the first place. It is also an opportunity to reconsider one’s first impressions after reading feedback from other users. Indeed, it is something we’d like to do with every camera we test here at MirrorLessons.

Grey is a beautiful colour – The Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) review

01/07/2015 By Mathieu

At the dawn of photography and motion pictures, monochrome was the only option for those who wanted to make images. When colour photography arrived on the scene, it was more expensive than B&W and therefore less accessible to the general public. However, as colour photography began to permeate the market and come down in price, monochrome imagery gradually became more of an artistic choice.

Today, we live in an era where digital imaging is at everyone’s fingertips. Even the simplest cameras deliver a wide array of options – colour, monotone, filters, effects, and more. What’s more, you have the freedom to adjust everything after the shoot.
