Photokina 2014: Hands-on with the Leica M-A, Leica M-60 and the missing “entry level” M

26/09/2014 By Mathieu

Leica announced plenty of new products at Photokina and its booth was also one of the most elegant including a very nice gallery featuring Leica photographers from all over the world. After our interview with Rachel Barker (Head of PR), we stopped at the various desks to try the new products.

Two of them were related to the history of the brand. After releasing a special edition of the Leica M for to celebrate 100 years of Leica photography, the German camera brand also announced another special edition to celebrate 60 years of the M system. There was also a new film M camera that pays tribute to and supports the use of film and analogue photography.

So, what are these two new Leica M cameras exactly?

Photokina 2014: Hands-on with the Canon PowerShot G7X a.k.a. the RX100’s new rival

25/09/2014 By Heather

For over two years, Sony has managed to monopolise the high-end point-and-shoot market with its RX100 series. The original RX100 made its debut in June 2012, whereas the third generation came out only a few months ago. It was the world’s first truly pocketable high-end camera which, with the help of its 20MP 1-inch sensor, became a very appealing second “carry-around” body for professionals and advanced shooters, and had remained unrivalled up until this year’s Photokina, when the brand new Canon PowerShot G7X came onto the scene.

Photokina 2014: Hands-on with the LX100, GM5, & Leica D-LUX (rebranded LX100)

23/09/2014 By Heather

Besides the CM1 smart camera, Panasonic also announced two other cameras at Photokina 2014: the LX100 and GM5. We had the chance to briefly try out both at the Panasonic booth at Photokina, and develop some first impressions about them.

Photokina 2014: Hands-on with the new Samsung NX1

20/09/2014 By Mathieu

The Samsung NX1 is certainly one of the most exciting camera announcements at Photokina this year. Samsung seems to have put the most advanced technology they possibly could in their flagship APS-C mirrorless model. We had a hands-on session at the Samsung booth but unfortunately, despite the presence of lots of samples in the area, they were all pre-production models and the SD card was actually sealed to make sure no one could insert his or her own card. But we were still able to try some other interesting features.

Photokina 2014: Hands-on with the Panasonic Lumix CM1, the true smart camera

20/09/2014 By Heather

I’d already spoken in our previous news article about how much I appreciate the concept behind the Lumix CM1, a hybrid smartphone and high-end compact from Panasonic, and my opinion hasn’t changed since then. Having seen the CM1 at Photokina, we can definitely confirm that Panasonic has planted the seed of an idea that could potentially revolutionise the smartphone market as far as digital photography is concerned.
