Olympus OM-D E-M1 II Full Review

We first saw it five months ago at Photokina, had the chance to put it through its paces during a dedicated press event in Spain, pitched it against other mirrorless cameras on our comparison website (including its predecessor, the E-M1) and now we’ve finally published our complete review of the Olympus OM-D E-M1 II.

As with all our latest reviews, this full review has been produced in video format. However, we’ve also included a summary of our findings and sample images in this article.

Allow me to begin this article with a personal note. Three years ago, Heather and I attended our first press event in Ireland for the launch of the original E-M1. I remember the excitement we felt being there amongst some of the most important journalists, photographers and bloggers; the curiosity of learning how events like this work; the short sleeps; the impromptu stop at a service station the following night to publish the article. At the time, lots of things were new to us. Today MirrorLessons has grown more mature and there are other two websites, plus a YouTube channel to keep it company.

In my full review of the RX100 mark IV, I stated in the title that it was the most powerful compact camera ever created. Well, with the RX100 V, Sony managed to do even better. Perhaps the improvements are not as significant as they were when they upgraded the mark III to the IV but some of them are impressive nonetheless.

Sony announced its new flagship APS-C camera, the a6500, a week ago and we had the chance to see a pre-production version at the Sony Europe headquarters in Weybridge. We couldn’t bring back pictures or video footage but spending a few hours with the new camera gave us an idea about its new features and the little upgrades in design and function. Most importantly, it gave us the opportunity to reflect on its rightful place as the flagship APS-C model and Sony’s aggressive strategy with its frequent camera releases.

Let me be honest: I sincerely don’t know what to think of the Canon EOS M5. There, I said it. I’m sitting here in front of my computer trying to write some useful insights and I realise I don’t really have a clue.

Do I like it? No. Do I dislike it? No. Perhaps the best word would be: indifference. But indifference doesn’t help me write a review, or in this case, a hands-on review, or a first impressions review, or whatever can be considered appropriate for an article that basically says: I touched it!
