Painting with Light in Wales: An Olympus Pen E-P5 Landscape Gallery

12/08/2013 By Mathieu

What I love about Wales are those unique green tones you see on the hills and mountains. And, being such a changeable climate, you can encounter some very dramatic scenery where shadows and light reveal the shapes and colours of the mountains like a painter would do on his canvas.

Trailing the British Butterflies: An Olympus Pen E-P5 Gallery

09/08/2013 By Heather

As many of you may have guessed, I am a bit of a lepidopterist. Nobody, not even Mathieu, has quite been able to get their head around my passion for these winged flowers, and admittedly, I too am mystified by the profound positive effect they have on me. Every year, as summer approaches, I jot down places to visit where butterflies thrive with the aim of adding at least one new species to my list of “butterflies I’ve seen”. Now that I am passionate about photography as well, the two interests have mingled, resulting in a very large collection of butterfly photos that grows 10-fold every year.

Travelling Home with the Olympus Pen E-P5: A Full Review

31/07/2013 By Heather

As of October this year, it will have been five years that I’ve lived in Turin, Italy. Five years. And as any wise ex-patriot knows, if you’ve resisted five years in a foreign country, chances are you’ll stay there for life.

In five years, I’ve can maneuver the streets with my eyes closed. I speak the language well enough to get by (though all my friends and family back home are convinced I’m fluent). I now think of fennel, artichokes and ham on melon as staple foods. And most importantly, I’ve met Mathieu, the one person who makes every difficulty I face here as a foreigner worth overcoming.

The Dysynni Valley Walk: An Olympus Pen E-P5 Gallery

26/07/2013 By Heather

Update: our full review of the Pen E-P5 is now up!

The Dysynni Valley is sandwiched between the seaside town of Tywyn where my parents live, and a small chain of rugged heather-covered hills characteristic of the Mid-Welsh landscape. Cutting through the valley is the Dysynni river, a peaceful place where fishing, canoeing and kayaking are popular pass-times, and hiking paths are plentiful. Turn right along the river and you reach the open sea. Turn left and you end up at Ynys Maengwyn (unus mine-gwin), the ruins of an old family estate that has been engulfed by forest and brambles.

The Good, the Bad and the Downright Wonderful of the Olympus Electronic Viewfinder VF-4

24/07/2013 By Heather

Update: our full review of the Pen E-P5 is now up!

I’ll be the first to make that sacrilege admission amongst photographers: I don’t need a viewfinder on my camera.

Perhaps this is because I am a pure product of the smartphone generation, or because my eyesight still serves me relatively well. Either way, holding my camera out in front of me in a pose which Kirt Tuck so eloquently calls the “stinky baby diaper hold” doesn’t make me feel like any less of a photographer. In truth, some of my best shots have been taken with my arms stretched out, full-length, with only an LCD screen to serve as guidance.
