Travelling Home with the Olympus Pen E-P5: A Full Review

31/07/2013 By Heather

As of October this year, it will have been five years that I’ve lived in Turin, Italy. Five years. And as any wise ex-patriot knows, if you’ve resisted five years in a foreign country, chances are you’ll stay there for life.

In five years, I’ve can maneuver the streets with my eyes closed. I speak the language well enough to get by (though all my friends and family back home are convinced I’m fluent). I now think of fennel, artichokes and ham on melon as staple foods. And most importantly, I’ve met Mathieu, the one person who makes every difficulty I face here as a foreigner worth overcoming.

5-Axis Stabilization in the Olympus Pen E-P5: Is it all it’s cracked up to be?

18/07/2013 By Heather

Update: our full review of the Pen E-P5 is now up!

For those who’ve been locked in a dark room for the past two years, there now exists a new kind of internal stabilization that has got camera zealots buzzing. It has the fancy name of ‘5-axis stabilization‘, and was first introduced in the revolutionary Olympus OM-D E-M5. Using gyroscopic sensors, it detects the amount of camera shake. Then, the IS unit built into the camera compensates accordingly, delivering clear, sharp and detailed images every time. The name “5-axis” derives from the fact that the sensor shifts in five different directions – vertical angle rotation, horizontal angle rotation, vertical shift, horizontal shift and rolling camera shake.

Obtaining a Shallow Depth-of-Field in Bright Sunlight with the Olympus Pen E-P5

10/07/2013 By Heather

Update: our full review of the Pen E-P5 is now up!

In terms of specifications, the Pen E-P5 is so similar to the king of the Olympus mirrorless line-up, the OM-D E-M5, that one would hardly connect it to the prosaic Pen bloodline. To use a shallow metaphor, it is the “Kate Middleton” of cameras – a maiden arisen from humble beginnings, but destined for something much greater.

The New Olympus Pen E-P5: Hands-on Video

07/07/2013 By Heather

Update: our full review of the Pen E-P5 is now up!

Just a week ago, we had a five-minute hands-on session with the Pen E-P5 at the Olympus Day here in Turin. Then, mere days later, this much-anticipated model from Olympus arrived in stores. Being the hopeless mirrorless enthusiasts we are, we immediately scooped it up from our friend Cristian at MCDigital, eager to see just how much this new Pen has improved on not only the E-P3, but the flagship model, the OM-D E-M5 as well. As it turns out, this little camera has lots to offer.
