A shallow depth of field with a Micro 4/3s camera? Yes, it is possible!

16/01/2014 By Mathieu

Many photographers looking for a lighter solution to their DSLR halt in their tracks when they hear the words ‘Micro Four Thirds sensor’. They fear that the depth of field and overall result produced by a smaller sensor will not be adequate to give that “3D pop” that many desire to see in the images they produce. Certainly, the way you handle depth of field on a full frame camera is different to a Micro Four Thirds camera. It is also true that there are some full frame lenses capable of rendering an astonishing bokeh that you will rarely, if ever, see on a M4/3s camera unless you use those specific lenses with an adapter.

Personally, the presence of a smaller sensor and the resulting depth of field would not influence my decision to either keep or discard a system. Bokeh is a natural consequence of how I take a shot and the feelings I want to imbue it with. The important thing is to know the system and lenses inside and out, and pick the best lens for your goal. I’ve never had a moment’s hesitation when shooting MFT nor thought of what I could have achieved if I’d had a full frame camera instead.

The Battle of the Pros: Olympus OM-D E-M1 vs. Panasonic Lumix GX7

14/01/2014 By Mathieu

At the end of 2013, both Olympus and Panasonic confirmed that they would be cutting back on low-end compact camera production, an inevitable reaction to the dramatic decrease in digital camera sales and the rise of the smartphone as a portable shooting device. As a change in strategy, they will begin investing their money and efforts into mid-to-high end mirrorless Micro Four Thirds models, two of which are the subject of this comparison.

The OM-D E-M1 and Lumix GX7 are representative of Olympus and Panasonic’s change in mindset. Though compact compared to their DSLR counterparts, they aspire to professional heights regarding both image quality and performance.

The Sony A5000 marks the end of the Nex & Kodak reveals the PixPro S-1

08/01/2014 By Mathieu

At CES 2014, there have certainly been a couple of surprises so far. First, Sony announced the brand new A5000 (or ILCE-A5000), which appears to be the direct successor to the Sony Nex 3N. Going through the technical data sheet, the most surprising specification is the change in name of the camera series from Nex to A. Then we have Kodak, whose first Micro Four Thirds camera, the PixPro S-1 was revealed today. A prototype had appeared at a press conference last year in China but no one was really sure when or where it would be officially announced, until today…

Voigtländer lenses on the Sony A7: A Wide and Bokehlicious First Look

07/01/2014 By Mathieu

As we’ve mentioned in previous posts, I had the chance to shoot with two Leica Summilux lenses for a couple of days while in France and I’m fully willing to admit that I enjoyed every second of it. Back in Turin, this positive experience persuaded me to try other manual M lenses since I already had the adapter with me. My hands fell on two Voigtländer lenses, the Super Wide Heliar 15mm f/4.5 and the Nokton 50mm f/1.1.
