My 4 Favourite Fujinon XF Lenses for the Interchangeable Fuji X Series

10/12/2013 By Mathieu

Note: the list has been updated with a 2015 edition.

The camera may be the chassis that records your images, but it is the lens that collects, manipulates and directs the light towards the sensor. I believe Shakespeare might have said, “the lens maketh the camera” if he had been a photographer instead of a writer. Without a lens, you have no image, and with a lens of poor quality, you may find it a challenge to create the image you had envisioned.

If Fujifilm is known for one thing, it is the quality of its glass. Though still limited, a clear roadmap shows that by 2014, Fujifilm will have an array of twelve excellent lenses to choose from, as well as three welcome additions from Zeiss.

Mirrorless on the Job: One week with the Olympus OM-D E-M1

05/12/2013 By Mathieu

The release of the new [easyazon_link asin=”B00EQ07PG2″ locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”easyazon-textlink-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]Olympus OM-D E-M1[/easyazon_link] has dramatically increased photographers’ interest in the Micro Four Thirds system. I had the chance to test it out for a day during the Castle Leslie event in Ireland but to fully understand how good a camera is for professional work, it was necessary that I use it in the field for my weekly photography assignments.

Olympus Europe kindly sent us the camera and three different lenses for one week. This allowed me to use it as my main camera for work and even bring it on a very short trip to France (you can check out my 5-axis stabilisation article here). It has been a very busy week with the E-M1!

One of the things that surprised me was that several of my Italian colleagues asked me “Is that the new OM-D?” while I was out on the job. The E-M1 seems to be the first MFT camera to have really captured the attention of professional photographers.

But is it really worthy of all the attention?

Leave your tripod at home! – An Olympus OM-D E-M1 Gallery

28/11/2013 By Mathieu

This week, we have been a little late in publishing our articles here at Mirrorlessons for a number of reasons I don’t want to bore you with. But don’t worry, we are still here, working very hard to bring you as many articles as we can. My special “Mirrorless on the Job” review of the OM-D E-M1 is almost ready so I’d thought I’d give you a sneak preview in the meantime.

During my first hands-on at Castle Leslie, I managed to compare the stabilisation of the new Olympus flagship camera to the E-M5 and saw a notable improvement, which makes this camera a real option for low-light situations. Not only can you avoid using high ISO values, but you can confidently shoot without a tripod if you don’t want to carry one with you as well.

Experimenting with the Lomography Micro Four Thirds lenses – A real optical multiple exposure gallery

12/11/2013 By Mathieu

Don’t think, just shoot! is Lomography’s motto. It is both a company and a photography movement which has grown a very large following through the usage of film, saturated colours, vignetting and the idea that a camera must become an extension of yourself in every moment of your life. Recently, they released their very first products for digital photography, the Experimental Lens Kit for Micro Four Thirds cameras. But what is Lomography exactly?

Pasta Ouverture: A stop motion animation with the Panasonic GX7

11/11/2013 By Mathieu

Lumix cameras are always overflowing with interesting features and the new Panasonic GX7 is no exception. The challenge, however, is finding a concrete reason to use them. Lumix cameras have always had excellent video features, and in the case of the GX7, it offers a very interesting stop motion animation feature (first introduced on the G6) in addition to time-lapse and standard video recording. Last week, my colleague’s wife Iryna asked us to help her with a project for the Design Masters Course she is finishing for the Red Oddity school in Bolzano. Serendipitously, that project involved stop motion animation. What could have been more ideal?
