Using the Lumix GH3 & GX7 for Photojournalism: An Interview with Ron Baselice

09/01/2014 By Heather

Welcome to our series of 100 interviews we will be holding with professional photographers who use mirrorless cameras for work! “Switching to a smaller and lighter system” has become somewhat of a buzz phrase as of late, but many working photographers take this philosophy seriously. From medical reasons such as resolving back and shoulder pain to the simple realisation that bigger does not mean better, photographers are turning to mirrorless systems now more than ever before.

This week’s interview is with Ron Baselice who works as a photojournalist for The Dallas Morning News. His two cameras of choice are the Panasonic Lumix GH3 and GX7, and he is involved in both still and video assignments for the newspaper.

An Unlikely Trio: The Olympus Pen E-P5 meets the Nokton 50mm f/1.1 & Voigtlander 15mm f/4.5

03/01/2014 By Heather

Since buying the Sony A7, Mat has been spending all his spare time trying out different manual lenses designed for the Leica system. The first two he tried were the Summilux 35mm and 50mm in Lyon. Then, as soon as we crossed back over the Italian border, he rented the Voigtlander Super Wide Heliar 15mm f/4.5 and the Nokton 50mm f/1.1, two lenses about which we’d heard nothing but great things. At the same time, we also picked up a Novoflex Leica to MFT adapter, which was lying sadly amongst the shelves upon shelves of Leica glass. It seemed wrong to deny it some shooting time on the Olympus Pen E-P5. 🙂

The Man of Many Systems: An Interview with David Taylor-Hughes

02/01/2014 By Heather

Welcome to our series of 100 interviews we will be holding with professional photographers who use mirrorless cameras for work! “Switching to a smaller and lighter system” has become somewhat of a buzz phrase as of late, but many working photographers take this philosophy seriously. From medical reasons such as resolving back and shoulder pain to the simple realisation that bigger does not mean better, photographers are turning to mirrorless systems now more than ever before.

This week’s interview is with David Taylor-Hughes, a photographer, videographer and musician from the English Midlands who has worked for many important clients such as British Airways, Virgin, and all UK national newspapers and television channels. He also runs a popular photography blog called SoundImagePlus, where he and his wife display much of their professional work as well as reviews of the gear they use. Currently, he uses a mirrorless mix consisting of the new Sony A7r, Fujifilm X-E1, X-E2 and X-Pro1, and the Panasonic Lumix GH3.

10 Mirrorless Blogs You Should Follow in 2014

01/01/2014 By Heather

Call me a nerd, but there is nothing that excites quite as much as coming across a great blog or website which talks about mirrorless cameras. (Well, pancakes with real maple syrup come pretty close! 🙂 ) Back in August, I made a list of mirrorless websites which I felt were worth following. Since then, I’ve come across many more excellent resources, so I felt it was about time to update the list with some of my favourites.

The following blogs feature an interesting variety of reviews, comparisons, photo essays and simple thoughts about the various mirrorless systems on the market. Some concentrate on a particular brand whereas others cover a wide spectrum like we do on Mirrorlessons.

It is wonderful to see that so many sites have taken an interest in promoting the mirrorless movement, and with 2014’s camera releases looking extremely promising, I’m sure many more will hop on the bandwagon soon. 😀

Getting Cosy with the Fuji X100s: Thoughts & Gallery from Lyon, France

30/12/2013 By Heather

The Fujifilm X100s was a joint purchase Mat and I made when we first began Mirrorlessons. Along with the OM-D E-M5, it is probably the one camera we’ve talked about the most. And yet, I’ve oddly spent very little time with it.

This is partially due to the fact that Mat frequently has the camera with him for work. I could also use the excuse that reviewing new cameras for the website is more important than becoming intimate with older ones.
