The Sony QX Lenscamera: The replacement for a dying compact camera market?

04/09/2013 By Heather

Today marks the announcement of the first two “lenscameras” from Sony, the DSC-QX10 and DSC-QX100. Only six months ago, the concept of a “lenscamera” seemed too fanciful for words, but here they are, against all odds!

These lenses represent a huge leap in technology from the external smartphone lenses previously produced. Whereas the QX lenses are actually cameras in and of themselves, previous external smartphone lenses were very much restricted by the tiny sensor and general capabilities of the phone.

Which are the best mirrorless cameras under $500?

03/09/2013 By Heather

One of the most common grievances we hear about mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras (MILC) is that they are overpriced.

Consumers feel that the compact body of a mirrorless camera should be the harbinger of a lower price point, but fail to realise that these cameras are often equal to their larger DSLR counterparts in terms of performance and image quality.

It is true that many mirrorless cameras, especially those designed for professionals such as the Olympus OM-D E-M5, Fuji X-Pro1, Panasonic Lumix GH3 and Sony NEX-7, can easily end up costing you thousands between the camera body and the many lenses and accessories you can buy for it.

The Olympus OM-D E-M5 & Pen E-P5 Photograph the Côr Meibion Bro Dysynni

Wales is a country that is often closely associated with male voice choirs. The tradition took hold in the early 19th century when South Walian coal miners formed groups and began to sing together. Though these mining communities have largely died out, the choral tradition continues in Wales, and has produced many popular choirs such as the Treorchy Male Choir and Morriston Orpheus Choir. Male voice choirs can be found singing at the beginning of international sports events such as rugby, and often perform worldwide.

Sony’s Official Announcement: NEX-5T, ILC-3000, two new lenses…but no Full Frame NEX?

30/08/2013 By Heather

If there is one camera company that is investing in the mirrorless movement at 110% capacity, it is Sony. Just this month, the company announced two new mirrorless cameras, the NEX-5T and the A3000, and two new lenses, the 16-70mm f/4 Zeiss and 18-105mm f/4 G PZ. Though still very much a rumour, this announcement will most likely be followed up by the much-anticipated confirmation of the Sony Full Frame NEX in the coming weeks. (We certainly can’t say that the good folk at Sony have been spending 2013 twiddling their thumbs, now, can we? :-))

13 Amazing Professional Photographers Who Use Mirrorless Cameras on the Job

23/08/2013 By Heather

As bloggers who constantly test and review photography gear, we are the very first to admit that it is surprisingly easy to let gear obsession get in the way of “real” photography–the people behind the photos, the results.

It is for this reason that we make a habit of regularly visiting the personal websites of photographers to explore their portfolios. Visiting the work of others momentarily draws us away from the gear aspect of photography and immerses us in the true essence of the hobby. Much like a Scorcese film can easily be distinguished from a Kubrick, we find it fascinating how one photographer’s photos can differ so greatly from those of another, despite the fact they use similar (or the same) gear.
