First Impressions of the Sony a6300

15/02/2016 By Mathieu

Along with the new G Master lenses, we got the chance to see the Sony a6300 at the recent European Press Event in Amsterdam. Unfortunately it was only a pre-production model so we couldn’t take any pictures with it. However you can check out some official image samples on our Mirrorless Curation blog.

I won’t make this article too long since there are only a few things I was able to check out. Sony asked us not to leave the conference room with the camera so as you can imagine, testing was quite limited. I summarised all my thoughts in the hands-on video below. Further down, I’ll share the most interesting aspects of this camera.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY – Hands-On with the Sony G Master lenses (24-70mm f/2.8 GM, 85mm f/1.4 GM & 70-200mm f/2.8 GM)

11/02/2016 By Mathieu

Yesterday we had the chance to try the new Sony G Master lenses in Amsterdam at the Sony Benelux headquarters. The 24-70mm f/2.8 and 85mm f/1.4 were final versions while the 70-200mm f/2.8 was a prototype and as such, was only on display. The event was very well-organised and we had plenty of time to test the lenses at various sets designed for the occasion.

Aperture, depth of field and sensor size – Or: how I learned to love smaller sensors as much as larger sensors

08/02/2016 By Mathieu

A few weeks ago I wrote an article explaining why the angle of view is more helpful than the focal length when comparing lenses of different camera systems. I also pointed out why there is the need for a reference and why the 35mm format (36x24mm, also called “full frame”) is the one we tend to use. If you haven’t read it, I invite you to check it out!

This time I want to talk about another topic that often causes confusion and triggers fierce discussions when comparing camera systems: aperture equivalence.

Opposites attract – Thoughts about the new Sony a6300 and the G Master lenses

03/02/2016 By Mathieu

Sony just announced the new a6300, the successor to the popular a6000, whose improved autofocus and video capabilities will definitely get heads turning. Along with its new flagship APS-C camera, the brand also introduced a new series of full-frame lenses called G Masters. The three first models clearly define the premium and pro categories of this line-up. Not only do we get the long-awaited f/2.8 constant aperture zoom lenses, but also an 85mm f/1.4 portrait lens.

First impressions of the Olympus Pen F

27/01/2016 By Mathieu

The Pen F was originally an interchangeable film camera that used the half frame format (18x24mm). It was a vertical format meaning you could capture two portrait oriented images in a single frame of 35mm film and as a result double the number of images on a single roll. Olympus produced three models between 1963 and 1970 along with 18 lenses.
