Which is the best Micro Four Thirds camera for 2013?

26/05/2013 By Heather

Have you only just heard about Micro Four Thirds cameras? If so, you’re in for a treat.

Micro Four Thirds (MFT) is a term used to refer to a mirrorless camera system produced specifically by Olympus and Panasonic. It was first announced in mid-2008 and has been thriving ever since. These cameras feature a MFT mount which is very similar to the Four Thirds system used in DSLRs with the exception that they don’t allow room for a mirror and pentaprism. As such, MFT camera bodies are smaller and more compact. It is for this very reason, along with their excellent image quality and speed, that the popularity of MFT cameras has soared in recent years.

If you are considering buying a Micro Four Thirds camera, have a look at the list we’ve prepared below of the “best of the best.” We’ve divided the cameras into two categories: the best in terms of quality, and the best in terms of value for money.

Panasonic is on the verge of releasing a retro Micro Four Thirds camera

23/05/2013 By Heather

Let’s travel back in time by almost a decade to the 2004 release of the Panasonic DMC-LC1. Though it had a purely digital brain, its body paid homage to the classic 35mm design of film cameras. It featured a modest 5MP sensor, a shutter speed dial on the top of the camera, as well as zoom, focus and aperture control on its high-performance Leica lens.

Two years later, the Panasonic DMC-L1, a digital SLR, was announced. It, too, featured that deliciously attractive retro body we know and love. It was also the first non-Olympus Four Thirds camera ever to be released.

Now, according to Mirrorless Rumors, Panasonic is on the verge of releasing a new Micro Four Thirds camera based on the beautiful retro design of the Panasonic DMC-L1-LC1 series.

Sony NEX-5K Review: Three years old and still going strong

22/05/2013 By Heather

Ever since we started this website, we’ve been reviewing relatively new mirrorless cameras. Not only, but the cameras we’ve tried generally fall into the “high-end” category, with superb speed and image quality surpassed only by mid-high end reflex cameras.

Yes, we have indeed been spoiled, which has made writing a fair review of the now ‘middle-of-the-road’ Sony NEX 5K all the more challenging. Released over three years ago (a lifetime in technological terms), it doesn’t have the speed, image quality, or extra functions available on the mirrorless cameras of today, but I still feel that the NEX-5K warrants the attention of amateur photographers looking for an alternative to the low-end compact or smartphone. To find out why, you’ll have to read on!
