‘Race the Train’ in Tywyn: A Panasonic GH3 Gallery

20/08/2013 By Heather

Every year in the small Welsh seaside town of Tywyn, an event occurs that attracts hundreds of people from all over the country and the continent. The event is called Race the Train where runners of all levels try to beat the miniature Tallylyn train back to the Tywyn train station. Though there are various routes, the most arduous is the 16 mile sprint through hilly fields, mud and…ahem…sheep and cow feces. It is great fun to stand along the sidelines, cheering on the runners with their muddy shoes and exhausted yet smiling faces.

Which is the best Micro Four Thirds camera for 2013?

26/05/2013 By Heather

Have you only just heard about Micro Four Thirds cameras? If so, you’re in for a treat.

Micro Four Thirds (MFT) is a term used to refer to a mirrorless camera system produced specifically by Olympus and Panasonic. It was first announced in mid-2008 and has been thriving ever since. These cameras feature a MFT mount which is very similar to the Four Thirds system used in DSLRs with the exception that they don’t allow room for a mirror and pentaprism. As such, MFT camera bodies are smaller and more compact. It is for this very reason, along with their excellent image quality and speed, that the popularity of MFT cameras has soared in recent years.

If you are considering buying a Micro Four Thirds camera, have a look at the list we’ve prepared below of the “best of the best.” We’ve divided the cameras into two categories: the best in terms of quality, and the best in terms of value for money.

Let It Snow: Black and White Photography with the OM-D E-M5 and the DMC-GH3

26/02/2013 By Mathieu

On Sunday, we woke up to a city covered in a thick blanket of snow! We seized the opportunity for an impromptu black and white photography session with our GH3 and E-M5. We shot in RAW format and converted the photos in Lightroom 4. There wasn’t a lot of light, of course, so we increased the contrast to make them look more dramatic. I used the E-M5 with the M.Zuiko 12mm f/2 except for the eleventh and fourteenth pictures which were shot with the M.Zuiko 45mm f/1.8. Heather used the GH3 with a M.Zuiko 14-42 F/3.5-5.6 lens. Enjoy the gallery!

From Milan to Turin: Panasonic GH3 Full Review

23/02/2013 By Mathieu

UPDATE: our in-depth review of the GH3 for video is online!

I’ll be honest, I have always followed the GH series more for its video capabilities than for its photographic features. The GH1 and especially the GH2 were two of the only serious alternatives to Canon DSLRs in the filmmaking industry – that is, until 2012 when Nikon and Sony entered the competition.

I have never tested the GH1 or GH2 for photography, so I thought it was time to remediate by taking a deep look at the Panasonic Lumix GH3, which is the latest and most advanced mirrorless camera Panasonic has ever designed.

Skiing in the Italian Alps with the Panasonic Lumix GH3 | Testing the Artistic Modes

12/02/2013 By Heather

I will admit that I am not much of a skier, and thus, not very Canadian in the eyes of most. My first memory of skiing is of crashing into a fence, and subsequently a garbage bin at the age of 14. It is also my fondest memory, not for the pain it caused but for the amusing story it has allowed me to tell years after the fact.

Not wanting to put myself in similar danger on the treacherous slopes of the Alps, I happily traded the opportunity to ski with fellow MirrorLessons writer Mathieu and his cousin Nicola for a cold and snowy day out with the Panasonic Lumix GH3, photographing skiers and snowboarders with much more talent than myself! The challenge was to limit myself to the Artistic Modes on the camera. I wanted to see which of these modes could best capture the exciting ambiance of the Alps.
