Sony A7r II vs A7s II: which one is better for video?

06/11/2015 By Mathieu

When Sony released the Sony A7r mark II, they made sure to give the camera not only impressive still capabilities but also advanced video recording. It is hard to beat this product when it comes to specifications: it has a new 42MP chip (the world’s first BSI 35mm sensor) and full pixel readout in 4K when using the APS-C/Super35 mode. Indeed, it comes across as the perfect hybrid camera if you want the ultimate image quality for still images and 4K video.

These Kings. These Subterraneans – Photography, words and music by Patrick La Roque

30/10/2015 By Mathieu

Last month, X-Photographer Patrick La Roque asked if we would like to review his latest artistic project “These Kings. These Subterraneans” as we had also reviewed his first e-book 1 Eye, Roaming back in 2013. Photography e-books are not one of the main topics we cover here at MirrorLessons but we never discard the chance to share something a little different. Plus, we have been following Patrick’s work with the Fujifilm X series since we created this website, so we were curious to see what his new project was about.

A welcome improvement – The Nikon 1 J5 Review

27/10/2015 By Mathieu

The Nikon 1 system is often underrated because of its small 1-inch CX sensor but it offers both stunning autofocus performance and continuous shooting speeds. The problem is that the series didn’t get off on the right foot. The first models were too expensive and I’ve always felt that there was a large discrepancy between the amazing performance and the target user. Expert photographers generally don’t consider the system because of the small sensor, while shooting at 30 or 60fps is probably too much for an amateur’s needs.

A day in Cambridge – Hands-On with the Zeiss Loxia 21mm f/2.8 (Sony E-Mount)

23/10/2015 By Mathieu

Today we spent a very pleasant day at the Zeiss Headquarters in Cambridge where we had the chance to try the new Loxia 21mm f/2.8 lens for the Sony E-mount system. In truth, this wasn’t the first time we’d seen the lens, as a prototype was on display at the Milvus event in Oberkochen (see our report here). But since the lens was still under embargo, we were kindly asked to remain quiet about it until the official announcement that happened the following week.

Not an A7 or DSLR competitor – Hands-On with the new Leica SL (Typ 601)

22/10/2015 By Mathieu

Two days after the announcement, Heather and I had the chance to see the new Leica SL in London. There is still a lot of talk surrounding this camera, as well as many questions related to its dimensions, price and real target user. As with every press event, one hour was not enough to arrive at a definitive conclusion. However, the title of this article already gives you a big hint as to where my impressions are headed.
