A Journey Through Venice: The Fuji X100s Review

06/04/2013 By Mathieu

Update: also check out our Mirrorless on the Job – Episode 2 about using the X100s for work.

I finally received my Fujifilm X100s last week, two days before leaving for Venice where Heather and I joined her parents for a quick Easter holiday.

After following all the fanfare surrounding the x100s on the Internet and reading a number of very good reviews, I was very curious to try the camera out for myself to see if all this enthusiasm really bore fruit. To try it out in Venice was an added bonus, as it is probably my favourite Italian city. I have decided to write this review in the form of a journal of our trip there, describing how I became increasingly confident with the camera and why I am enjoying it more and more each day.

I am aware that 5 days aren’t enough to write a complete and in-depth review, but since I’m planning to use it frequently, I will post more thought about it in the weeks to come. Ready? Time to chase down some gondolas!

Working with RAW files in Adobe Lightroom: Huelight Color Fidelity Camera Profiles

29/03/2013 By Mathieu

One of the great advantages of modern and digital photography is the ability to shoot RAW files. They are the digital version of film and give you the possibility to “develop” them as you would film, with the advantages of doing so faster than ever. Almost every brand has its own proprietary RAW format, but they all perform in the same way.

My favourite software for processing RAW files is Adobe Lightroom mainly for its speed. Lightroom is the perfect way to catalog, organize, convert and process your photographs, and it accepts all kinds of file formats (raw, jpg, psd, tiff etc.).

Milan Photoshow 2013 – A Fuji X20 Gallery

26/03/2013 By Mathieu

Update: Check out our x20 full review, homemade macro test, Advanced mode test, and high ISO test.

The Photoshow is not only an occasion to test and see many cameras, but also an opportunity to take pictures, as you can find many models on every major manufacturer’s stand, as well as interesting situations worth photographing. So while I was moving from one stand to another, I had some quality time with my new Fuji X20. Here are some of the pictures that came out of the show. Enjoy!

Photoshow 2013 – Hands-on with the new Nikon Coolpix A

25/03/2013 By Mathieu

Nikon announced the Coolpix A at the beginning of March 2013. It is the first Coolpix to incorporate a large sensor, the DX sensor that is used in Nikon entry and medium level DSLRs. In fact, it seems to share the exact same 16 megapixel sensor as the Nikon D7000. The Coolpix A features a 200-6400 ISO sensitivity range, and doesn’t have a low pass filter, which should increase the sharpness of the pictures. It has fixed 18.5mm lens (28mm equivalent), and is the smallest compact camera with a large sensor, according to Nikon.

Photoshow 2013 – Hands-on with the new Sigma DN lenses for Micro Four Thirds

24/03/2013 By Mathieu

In late January 2013, Sigma announced three new lenses for Micro Four Thirds cameras: the 19mm and the 30mm, which have been redesigned and enhanced in optical performance from the previous versions, and a brand new 60mm, all with a fast 2.8 aperture. I had the chance to try them all at the Photoshow in Milan. The lady at the Sigma stand told me that they were prototypes, so the images you’re about to see may not accurately reflect the performance of these lenses, or their physical appearance once they appear on the market.
