Will the new Olympus OM-D E-M1 be the best MFT camera ever?

19/08/2013 By Mathieu

Update: 43rumors has posted some new pictures of the E-M1 with the new 12-40mm f/2.8 lens attached. I have to say that I like the design more now that I can see the body+lens combo. It looks very solid and well-built. We can clearly see now two Fn buttons in addition to the toggle on the rear. There is also a burst/HDR button and an AF area mode button on the top left of the camera. I can’t help but wonder if Olympus will release a black/silver version as well. The tech geek dreamer inside of me would have preferred a new version of the two f/2 constant aperture zoom lenses Olympus had for the Four Thirds DSLR system. It would have been a much more interesting alternative to the two f/2.8 Lumix zoom lenses and would also have attracted more professionals. It is probably something to do with Olympus trying to keep the lenses small enough for the body. Not only, but they are probably harder to design for the MFT system as well.

I wasn’t planning to write about the rumored OM-D E-M1 until the release became official, but then something unexpected happened yesterday. A video about a pre-production model of the new E-M1 that wasn’t supposed to be published was leaked from the Engadget website. In the video, an American representative from Olympus explains in great detail some of the new features and gives us an up-close look at the new camera.

Should I buy the Pen E-P5, or wait for the new Panasonic GX7?

02/08/2013 By Mathieu

Panasonic is becoming more and more serious about the DSLM (Digital Single Lens Mirrorless) market. Today, the Japanese firm announced the new Lumix GX7, the successor to the GX1, packed with loads of new and advanced features such as a tiltable built-in viewfinder, 1/8000 shutter speed, focus peaking and excellent video quality to name a few. This combination of advanced features in a cool retro package makes it one of, if not the most complete mirrorless interchangeable lens camera on the market today. Along with the GX7, Panasonic also announced the new Leica DG 42.5mm (85mm equivalent) called Nocticron with a fast aperture of f/1.2! It was about time that either Panasonic or Olympus released a lens that fast for the M43 system, and this one could definitely become the portrait lens every Micro Four Thirds user dreams about.

The GX7 is very similar in terms of specs and price to the new Pen E-P5 released by Olympus just a month ago (read our complete E-P5 review here). It is without a doubt one of the best Micro Four Thirds cameras out there right now. So, this begs the inevitable question: Should I buy the E-P5 or wait for the new GX7?

The Panasonic Lumix GX7 set to be a strong mirrorless competitor

27/07/2013 By Heather

It’s been a while since we posted a bit of news, but we felt this camera merited some attention!

In a few months, we’ll be seeing the appearance of the Lumix GX7, Panasonic’s first retro-style mirrorless camera. It will be based on the design of the Four Thirds L1 camera and will feature a Magnesium body in either black or silver.

Photographers Max Angeloni & Giulia Torra comment on the Fujifilm X-M1

17/07/2013 By Heather

Here we are again, writing about the new Fuji X-M1, but this time we want to share someone else’s opinion. We don’t do this often, but in this case, we really appreciated Fujifilm Italia’s innovative approach in presenting this new camera to the press and public for the first time.

What they did was invite two photographers, one male, one female, who belong to two different generations and embrace two different photography styles, to try the new camera and share their photos/thoughts about it. The full gallery that has been published (you can see it here) reflects this approach, where these two different styles and generations come together to achieve a common goal – to present a camera, not as a cold hard gadget, but as a medium of artistic expression that can bridge even the widest gaps, be they stylistic, generational, or gender-based.
