Sunday with the Samsung NX Mini – Celebrating Diwali in Turin

28/10/2014 By Heather

Given Turin’s fairly large population of Indian residents, it was far from surprising to discover that a Diwali festival was being held at the Borgo Medievale castle this past Sunday. The “festival of lights” as it is otherwise known is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated on the night of the darkest new moon of the Hindu month Kartika, which is always sometime in October or November.

Since a used Samsung NX Mini had just appeared in the window of our favourite second-hand camera store McDigital, we decided to rent it for the day to document the festivities. It is a camera that I’ve long been eager to try due the very good reviews and its status as one of the smallest interchangeable mirrorless cameras on the market.

Always look on the “wide” side of life – The Fujifilm XF 10-24mm f/4 Review

23/10/2014 By Mathieu

We bought the Fujinon XF 10-24mm with the Fujifilm X-T1 six months ago and it is the lens I have used the most on the X-T1 since then. I’ve always loved wide-angle lenses, with a personal preferences for fixed focal lengths. This is why I always thought that the XF 14mm f/2.8 I tested on the X-Pro1 last year would be my ideal choice, but after using the 10-24mm extensively, I am not so sure about this anymore.

Do smartphones and interchangeable lenses go together? – Hands-on with the Sony QX1

16/10/2014 By Mathieu

Sony released its innovative Lens Style cameras last year as a response to the increasing popularity of photography performed with smartphones. The QX series consists of lenses that feature the sensor and all the necessary technology to constitute a “proper” camera. What they lack is a traditional grip and an LCD screen but that’s where your smartphone comes into play. By connecting the two devices with Wifi or NFC technology, your smartphone enables you to control everything on screen, from the adjustments of settings to image taking.

Could it be a (r)evolution? – First impressions of the Lytro Illum light field camera

09/10/2014 By Mathieu

Since its announcement in April earlier this year, I’ve been very curious about the Lytro Illum because it offers something that none of the other digital cameras out there can: a new way of shooting and seeing photographs, and as such, a new and original tool to be creative with. But while the idea sounds appealing, it is only when you actually see and play with the camera that you start to realise how much potential it has.

First impressions of the Sony RX100 III: Is it worth upgrading from the RX100 II?

08/10/2014 By Heather

If you’ve been following MirrorLessons from the beginning, you might remember that we purchased a Sony RX100 II for our holiday in Wales last year. Even back then, we were highly impressed by the way Sony managed to merge high-end technology and compactness into one body. It was the first mirrorless camera that truly lived up to the definition of “pocketable” while producing images of such quality that one would feel comfortable submitting them to a client.
