Using Four Thirds lenses with the Olympus OM-D E-M1: When are they suitable?

27/06/2014 By Mathieu

With the release of the flagship OM-D E-M1, Olympus put a definitive end to its Four Thirds DSLR line and a stop to rumours predicting a new model, the E-7. The main reason is because the E-M1 and its new autofocus system is capable of handling both MFT and FT lenses. As such, the company decided to take a risk and pour all its efforts into the MFT system.

I had the chance to briefly test the E-M1’s AF capabilities with the Zuiko lenses last year at Castle Leslie and my first impression was positive.

Mirrorless Cameras for Professional Work | Where they prevail & where they fail

24/06/2014 By Mathieu

While DSLRs remain the best-selling cameras and the main choice of professional photographers, general interest in mirrorless cameras is growing little by little. Many articles can be found online about photographers who have switched from their DSLR to a MILC system or are starting to use a mirrorless camera as a second body. As with any system, there are positive aspects but also limits that must be considered.

A taste of Leica in the MFT system – A Panasonic-Leica Nocticron DG 42.5mm f/1.2 Review

10/06/2014 By Mathieu

This year Panasonic released two new lenses designed by Leica for the Micro Four Thirds system. One of them cannot go unnoticed. Not only is it larger and heavier than your standard MFT lens, but it is also expensive. Actually, at the time of writing this article, it is the most expensive lens available for both Lumix and Olympus Micro Four Thirds cameras (until the next Olympus pro lenses come along).

Let’s shoot some action! – An in-depth look at the Fuji X-T1 autofocus capabilities

05/06/2014 By Mathieu

Note: in June 2015, Fujifilm released the firmware version 4.00 that adds several new features concerning the autofocus. You can read my in-depth review about it here.

In my opinion, there are two ways to evaluate the autofocus of a camera. The first is to leave everything to the camera. You point and shoot and see how the camera software/hardware behaves. The second way is to understand how the camera works to get the most out of it. This requires not only more patience and time, but also the presence of various, and sometimes difficult, conditions to truly understand what the camera’s limits are.
