Pushing Your Boundaries: Using the M.Zuiko 45mm f/1.8 as a Landscape Lens

22/08/2013 By Heather

The M.Zuiko 45mm f/1.8 is a lens we’ve owned since we first bought our introductory Micro Four Thirds camera, the Olympus OM-D E-M5. The equivalent of 90mm on a Full Frame camera, it is natively a portrait lens and works wonderfully to that end with its beautiful bokeh and a maximum fast aperture of f/1.8.

But what happens when you push the boundaries of a lens with such a clear-cut task as the 45mm? Great things, I believe! Sometimes it can be a wonderful creative exercise to use a lens for a genre of photography for which it isn’t intended.

‘Race the Train’ in Tywyn: A Panasonic GH3 Gallery

20/08/2013 By Heather

Every year in the small Welsh seaside town of Tywyn, an event occurs that attracts hundreds of people from all over the country and the continent. The event is called Race the Train where runners of all levels try to beat the miniature Tallylyn train back to the Tywyn train station. Though there are various routes, the most arduous is the 16 mile sprint through hilly fields, mud and…ahem…sheep and cow feces. It is great fun to stand along the sidelines, cheering on the runners with their muddy shoes and exhausted yet smiling faces.

Scaling Bird Rock: A Sony RX100M2 Gallery

15/08/2013 By Mathieu

On Sunday we went on a walk up to the top of Bird Rock, a miniature mountain close to the town of Tywyn where we are staying in Wales. It was my second day with the camera, after beginning to test it the day before in Colwyn Bay (you can check out my first impressions review here). It is a short yet very beautiful walk amidst wonderful scenery; a great opportunity to have better a look at the lens performance, colour reproduction and dynamic range of the Sony RX100MII.

Painting with Light in Wales: An Olympus Pen E-P5 Landscape Gallery

12/08/2013 By Mathieu

What I love about Wales are those unique green tones you see on the hills and mountains. And, being such a changeable climate, you can encounter some very dramatic scenery where shadows and light reveal the shapes and colours of the mountains like a painter would do on his canvas.

Trailing the British Butterflies: An Olympus Pen E-P5 Gallery

09/08/2013 By Heather

As many of you may have guessed, I am a bit of a lepidopterist. Nobody, not even Mathieu, has quite been able to get their head around my passion for these winged flowers, and admittedly, I too am mystified by the profound positive effect they have on me. Every year, as summer approaches, I jot down places to visit where butterflies thrive with the aim of adding at least one new species to my list of “butterflies I’ve seen”. Now that I am passionate about photography as well, the two interests have mingled, resulting in a very large collection of butterfly photos that grows 10-fold every year.
