Review of the Expert Shield Screen Protector for the X100s and E-M5

04/06/2013 By Mathieu

Ethics statement: I have been asked by Expert Shield UK to test their screen protectors but I haven’t been paid to do so. The following reflects my thoughts and my thoughts only about its products.

Screen protectors tend to be a given for our smartphones, but it is less common to use them on digital camera LCD displays. We have the tendency to think that smartphones are more likely to be scratched because we place them everywhere – in our pockets, or in our bags, both of which are filled with potentially hazardous objects such as keys or pens. But camera screens can be just as vulnerable, which is why protecting them is a good idea.

Q&A: Do mirrorless cameras make noise?

30/05/2013 By Mathieu

One question those curious about upgrading or switching to a mirrorless camera may have is:

Do mirrorless cameras make noise?

This question is particularly relevant to professional photographers who are often faced with situations where noise can be intrusive, such as contemporary dance or theatre performances.

Why I am switching to mirrorless for work: The ‘Mirrorless on the Job’ series preview

29/05/2013 By Mathieu

When I first bought the Olympus OM-D E-M5 at the beginning of 2013, I spent a lot of time learning the ins and outs of the camera, taking it out on the streets on weekends and using it while on holiday. It wasn’t long before I started to see the potential of this fast little mirrorless for my job.

Its small size and weight, fast autofocus and amazing quality forced me to update my approach to photography. This was only reconfirmed when the Fuji X100s entered my life. I had bought the X100s thinking that I would use it for personal purposes only, but it always seems to find its way into my camera bag for work. In fact, I almost use it as much as the OM-D, if not more on some occasions.

OM-D E-M5 vs DMC-GH3: clash of the titans in the Micro Four Thirds realm!

28/05/2013 By Mathieu

In the Olympus OM-D E-M5 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3, the Micro Four Thirds system has its two best representatives: two compact yet professional bodies that prove what MFTs is capable of when it comes to image quality for both still and video, as well as the flexibility of the system.

But what is the purpose of comparing two cameras?

Well, for us, not only is it a way of pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of each model, but it is also a chance to summarize our personal experiences with them. It is a way in which we can give you advice about the style of photography that best suits these cameras, while helping you answer that tricky question: which model is best for me?

A weekend with the Fuji X-Pro 1: first impressions and thoughts about the Fuji X system

17/05/2013 By Mathieu

Update: now you can check out the complete review about the X-Pro 1!

Since a few days isn’t enough time to write a review with a capital “R”, I thought it would be more interesting to share my initial thoughts about the camera and the X system in general. The Fuji X-Pro 1 is one of the cameras that has deeply captured my interest since its release, and now that I’ve had the chance to test it, I’m trying to figure out if it is a system that I could embrace for my personal projects or work.

I had the chance to play around with it two weekends ago. Heather and I went to Genova in the Liguria region, chasing the sun, as the weather is very unpredictable these days in northern Italy. Luckily for us, the day was wonderful and I was able test the camera along many of the small streets of the old city, as well as along the Costa Ligure.
