Mirrorless on the Job: One week with the Olympus OM-D E-M1

05/12/2013 By Mathieu

The release of the new [easyazon_link asin=”B00EQ07PG2″ locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”easyazon-textlink-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]Olympus OM-D E-M1[/easyazon_link] has dramatically increased photographers’ interest in the Micro Four Thirds system. I had the chance to test it out for a day during the Castle Leslie event in Ireland but to fully understand how good a camera is for professional work, it was necessary that I use it in the field for my weekly photography assignments.

Olympus Europe kindly sent us the camera and three different lenses for one week. This allowed me to use it as my main camera for work and even bring it on a very short trip to France (you can check out my 5-axis stabilisation article here). It has been a very busy week with the E-M1!

One of the things that surprised me was that several of my Italian colleagues asked me “Is that the new OM-D?” while I was out on the job. The E-M1 seems to be the first MFT camera to have really captured the attention of professional photographers.

But is it really worthy of all the attention?

Hands-On with the Olympus OM-D E-M1: Autofocus with Four Thirds & Lumix lenses

22/09/2013 By Mathieu

Our OM-D E-M1 hands-on coverage:

Low-light performance – Olympus Europe interview – M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/2.8 Pro lens – Autofocus

The new Olympus OM-D E-M1 represents a fusion of two distinct systems: Four Thirds and Micro Four Thirds. Olympus did develop a new Four Thirds DSLR, the E-7, but then decided to drop the project when they realised they could incorporate the best parts of both systems into one single camera. The body remains compact but includes all the features we professionals need, and works seemlessly with all Olympus Zuiko and M.Zuiko lenses.

Hands-On with the Olympus OM-D E-M1: Low-Light Performance

Our OM-D E-M1 hands-on coverage:

Low-light performance – Olympus Europe interview – M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/2.8 Pro lens – Autofocus

The Olympus OM-D E-M5 was the first camera we reviewed here at MirrorLessons back in January 2013. It is also the camera which inspired us to start this blog and led me to switch to mirrorless for both my personal and professional work. So when Olympus invited us to try out the new OM-D E-M1, to say that we were over the moon would be an understatement. We tried lots of different features during the afternoon and evening but in this article, I want to share my first impressions regarding low-light performance, one of the aspects I was very curious to try.

Travelling Home with the Olympus Pen E-P5: A Full Review

31/07/2013 By Heather

As of October this year, it will have been five years that I’ve lived in Turin, Italy. Five years. And as any wise ex-patriot knows, if you’ve resisted five years in a foreign country, chances are you’ll stay there for life.

In five years, I’ve can maneuver the streets with my eyes closed. I speak the language well enough to get by (though all my friends and family back home are convinced I’m fluent). I now think of fennel, artichokes and ham on melon as staple foods. And most importantly, I’ve met Mathieu, the one person who makes every difficulty I face here as a foreigner worth overcoming.
